Gunfire and explosions were heard on Saturday morning in Niger's capital, Niamey, including around a military base near the city's airport, which has been attacked twice this year by jihadists. The origins of the shooting were not immediately clear, and authorities made no official comment. Local residents reported heavy gunfire at Base 101, with shots starting around 1:00 am local time and continuing until daybreak. Niger has been ruled by a military junta for three years that has struggled to contain jihadist violence plaguing the country for about a decade.
