Niger's presidential guard repelled an attempt by insurgents from within the armed forces to enter the presidential palace in Niamey on Saturday, according to a security source. Heavy gunfire was heard in several neighborhoods, including near the palace and the airport area, which hosts a major military base. State television signal was cut for over an hour before being restored. Niger has been under military rule for three years and has struggled to contain jihadist violence in the region.
