Nigeria Tasks AU on Innovative Financing to Strengthen Peace, Security

Nigeria has called on the African Union to develop innovative and sustainable financing mechanisms to strengthen the continent's ability to prevent and resolve conflicts without excessive dependence on external funding. Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu made the call at the 26th Extraordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union in Luanda, Angola. She commended progress in strengthening the AU Peace Fund, noting member states had contributed about $350.2 million, representing 87.5 per cent of the $400 million target. The Fund's balance has surpassed $405 million, with about $39 million disbursed for mediation and peace support operations.
