Nigeria spent over N1 trillion on steel imports in 2025, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, despite having abundant raw materials at the idle Ajaokuta Steel Complex. The steel industry is considered vital for industrialization, and the import bill has averaged about N526 billion annually over the past six years, highlighting the impact of the sector's underdevelopment.
