The Nigerian Navy, in collaboration with the Federal Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, launched Operation Abo Eja to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. During the operation, three fishing trawlers were intercepted and about 30 crew members arrested for suspected fisheries violations. This comes as Nigeria imports over 70 per cent of its fish requirements, making the protection of local fish stocks critical for food security and the blue economy.
