Dr. Omar Alieu Touray is set to leave his position as President of the ECOWAS Commission after four years marked by significant political and security challenges in West Africa, including the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the bloc. His departure, along with his 2022-2026 team, comes as ECOWAS faces the task of rebuilding regional confidence and addressing security and development pressures. An official ceremony to welcome incoming and farewell outgoing officials is scheduled for August 31 in Abuja. Touray, a Gambian diplomat, assumed office in 2022.
