Fatimatu Abdullahi, a grandmother in Jos, Plateau State, has recounted how diphtheria killed her two grandchildren within one week. The victims, 14-year-old Umar Muktar and 17-year-old Hauwa Shafi'u, lived with her before their deaths. Umar fell ill first and died within three to four days without being taken to a specialized hospital. Hauwa later developed similar symptoms, was taken to Jos University Teaching Hospital, and was confirmed to have diphtheria.
