Sheikh Haliru Maraya, a Kaduna-based Islamic scholar and former adviser to two former governors, has warned that reintroducing fuel subsidies could cripple Nigeria's economy. Reacting to calls for subsidy restoration ahead of the 2027 elections, he said the country cannot afford the financial burden. He urged Nigerians to be patient with the government's subsidy removal, noting that funds saved could be used for infrastructure. Maraya cited estimates that Nigeria consumes 47 to 64 million litres of petrol daily, with a total cost of about N1,218 per litre.
