Presidential candidate of the Accord Party, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has stated that his proposed petrol price of N605 per litre is only the first step in a broader energy policy aimed at eventually reducing the price to between N200 and N300 per litre. Hashim, who has campaigned on an energy security agenda, believes Nigeria can achieve cheaper petrol without reverting to the opaque subsidy regime that existed before the 2023 reform. He emphasized that the fundamental question is not the international price of petrol, but the actual cost of producing crude, refining it, and delivering the finished product to Nigerian consumers. His campaign has used a domestic crude production cost of $45 per barrel to explain the proposed starting price.
