Police in Lagos fired tear gas on Monday to disperse pensioners protesting at the Lagos House and State House of Assembly over outstanding pension adjustments and wage awards. The pensioners, under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, demanded the implementation of approved pension increases and payment of arrears. The use of force heightened tension, with retirees expressing displeasure over the dispersal. The pensioners had earlier set an August 31 deadline for the payment of their outstanding entitlements.
