The US Supreme Court has decided that President Donald Trump can continue building a new ballroom at the White House. This is a big win for Trump, as the court voted 5-4 to lift a previous order that had stopped the construction. Chief Justice John Roberts, who usually leans conservative, joined the three liberal justices in disagreeing with the decision to allow construction to proceed. The project has faced criticism because some people believe Trump acted illegally by ordering the demolition of part of the White House. The court's ruling means that while the lawsuit against the project continues in lower courts, construction can keep moving forward. The lawsuit is brought by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which argues that the ballroom's size would harm the historical and cultural value of the area. The Supreme Court indicated that the lawsuit might not have a strong case because the person bringing it, Alison Hoagland, does not seem to have a legal reason to complain about the project. They noted that just being upset about a government project isn't enough to qualify as a legal injury. Despite the controversy, Trump argues that the ballroom is important for hosting official events and that the project also includes a military bunker for national security. Some lower courts had previously allowed work on the bunker but paused the ballroom construction until now.
