The Nigerian Federal Government has approved a significant project worth $1.295 billion to develop the Challawa Gorge Dam in Kano. This project will be managed by a private company called Al Qaryah Agro Allied Ltd and aims to turn the dam into a major agricultural hub. The approval, which was communicated in a letter from the Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, confirms that the project is environmentally and technically sound. Al Qaryah will be responsible for operating and managing various modern farming techniques, including fish farming and growing crops on water surfaces. The CEO of Al Qaryah, Abubakar M. Nagwamatse, explained that the project will create around 10,000 jobs and increase food production, which could help lower food prices and open up opportunities for exports. The plan includes advanced farming methods and infrastructure, such as a large feed mill and a hatchery for fish. The river basin authority supports this initiative as it believes it will greatly benefit the economy of Northern Nigeria and enhance the use of the region's water resources.
