Stock Market Gains N1.9tn to Close August  Positive

In August 2026, the Nigerian stock market performed well, gaining N1.9 trillion in value. The overall index, which measures the market's performance, increased by 1.20%, closing at 244,199.39 points. This means that while the market was slightly down for the month overall, it has gained a significant 56.9% since the beginning of the year. Various sectors saw positive growth, especially banking, consumer goods, oil and gas, and insurance. However, the industrial goods sector saw a slight decline. The rise in the market was largely due to increases in the prices of major companies like MTN Nigeria and Zenith Bank. Most stocks did well, with 43 stocks gaining value while only 16 lost value. Omatek Ventures had the highest gain, rising by 10% to N1.65 per share. Other notable gainers included Ikeja Hotel and Sovereign Trust Insurance. On the downside, Abbey Bank had the largest loss, dropping by 9.41%. Overall, the trading volume increased slightly, with a total of 606.19 million shares traded, worth N38.70 billion. Looking ahead, experts believe that the market will continue to do well as investor confidence grows, especially following positive news about market classification.
