Donald Duke, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party, criticized the current debate on petrol subsidies in Nigeria. He believes that petrol could be sold for about N200 per litre if the country effectively used its crude oil resources and the various products made from it. Duke called the subsidy debate a “scam,” arguing that Nigeria has enough resources to make petrol cheaper. He pointed out that when President Bola Tinubu removed the petrol subsidy, it was claimed to be unsustainable, while other leaders like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi have different views on handling the rising petrol prices. Duke emphasized that Nigeria is rich in energy resources but is still struggling with energy shortages because of a lack of political will and proper planning. He also criticized the waste of natural gas, which is flared off instead of being used, and questioned why Nigeria exports gas to other countries while its own citizens face energy challenges. Duke believes that with the right approach and commitment from the government, Nigeria can overcome its energy issues and better serve its people.
