A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, has scheduled a hearing for September 3, 2026, regarding Chief Gani Topba, a leader of the Conscience of Ogoni People. He faces serious charges, including terrorism and cybercrime. Topba is accused of trying to take control of oil wells in Ogoniland to pressure the government to remove Shell Petroleum from oil contracts in the area. He also allegedly made a video that criticized the leadership of a local group, KAGOTE, which is said to have caused fear among its members and could lead to social unrest, similar to issues that occurred in Ogoniland in 1994. Topba, who has denied all charges, is currently involved in discussions with the government about oil exploration in Ogoniland. His lawyer, Golden Awi, argues that the charges are baseless and that no crime was committed. The court proceedings were delayed to allow the prosecution to respond to a bail application filed by Topba's defense team.
