The Federal Government of Nigeria has started giving out Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances and tricycle ambulances across the country. This initiative aims to improve emergency medical care, especially in rural areas where access to timely healthcare can be challenging. At a ceremony to launch this program, Ms. Daju Kachollom S., the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, emphasized that getting patients to medical facilities quickly can save lives. She mentioned that the program is part of a broader effort to ensure that distance does not prevent people from receiving emergency care, particularly for mothers, newborns, and those involved in accidents. The government has also designated Riyom General Hospital as a branch of Jos University Teaching Hospital to enhance healthcare services in that area. Ms. Kachollom encouraged local governments to take responsibility for these new ambulances and ensure they are used effectively. The Plateau State Governor, represented at the event, praised the initiative as a vital investment in emergency healthcare. He assured that the ambulances would be used properly to improve patient transport and referrals between hospitals. Overall, this program reflects the government's commitment to reducing preventable deaths and improving health outcomes in Nigeria, particularly in underserved communities. The success of this initiative will be measured by the lives saved rather than just the number of ambulances distributed.
