President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana has arrived in Belgrade to attend the 65th anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). This event is significant because Ghana was one of the founding members of NAM in 1961. The summit is themed “The Legacy of Non-Alignment: Lessons for Today’s World” and focuses on important principles like equality among nations, respect for countries' borders, not interfering in each other's internal matters, and boosting economic cooperation among developing nations. The summit is hosted by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and includes representatives from over 30 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. NAM, which has 120 member states, is the largest international group outside the United Nations and was created during the Cold War to help developing nations maintain an independent stance without aligning with either the Western or Soviet powers. Ghana's first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, played a key role in establishing NAM alongside leaders from other countries like Yugoslavia, India, Egypt, and Indonesia.
