The Nigerian government is making it mandatory for all universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education to participate in a national ranking system. This decision was announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during a meeting with a committee focused on university rankings. The new ranking system is part of a broader effort to improve the quality and performance of higher education in Nigeria, as outlined in President Bola Tinubu's education reform agenda. The aim is to help schools assess their performance, identify areas for improvement, and encourage healthy competition among institutions. The first ranking for universities will start in September 2026, and plans will be made to include polytechnics and colleges of education later. The Federal Government will provide funding for this initiative through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), which will also create guidelines for the ranking process. The initiative is expected to help Nigerian institutions gain better recognition globally and improve the overall quality of education in the country. Both the Minister of State for Education and the chairman of the ranking committee expressed their support for this move, highlighting its importance for accountability and quality in education.
