The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) of Nigeria has stated that the planned withdrawal of over 200 U.S. troops from the country will not weaken the strong security partnership between Nigeria and the United States. Major General Samaila Uba, the Director of Defence Information, explained that this withdrawal is a normal part of their ongoing cooperation and should not be seen as a sign of trouble in their relationship. He emphasized that the U.S. presence in Nigeria was linked to specific military goals, especially in fighting terrorism, and that cooperation in areas like intelligence sharing and training will continue even with fewer U.S. troops. Uba reassured that the main responsibility for protecting Nigeria lies with its own security forces. He also mentioned that the military's focus remains on direct operations against terrorists, while they will support other non-military efforts to improve security. Uba made it clear that the military does not support negotiations with terrorists or paying ransoms. Instead, they will work alongside the police, which is the main agency for internal security, to help address the causes of insecurity in Nigeria.
