In the second quarter of 2026, Nigeria's economy grew by 4.43% compared to the same period last year. This growth is a positive sign as the country aims to reach a one-trillion-dollar economy by 2030. The growth rate is better than the previous year's 4.23% and the first quarter of 2026, which was 3.89%. Overall, the economy grew by 4.16% in the first half of 2026, up from 3.68% during the same time in 2025. Many sectors of the economy are doing well, with 27 areas showing growth of over 3%, compared to 23 in the previous year. Key sectors like manufacturing and agriculture also saw significant improvements. The growth is partly due to better activity in productive sectors and a more stable foreign exchange market, with the naira (Nigeria's currency) appreciating by over 12% in the first half of 2026. This has led to a 17% increase in the economy when measured in U.S. dollars. The government believes that this growth, along with social programs, could help improve the financial situation for many Nigerians and lift them out of poverty. They are optimistic that Nigeria can become one of the largest economies in Africa by 2028 if the current growth continues. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has also recognized Nigeria as one of the top contributors to global economic growth in 2026, projecting it will account for about 1.5% of global growth. The government is focused on maintaining stability and investor confidence to keep this positive trend going.
