On August 29, 2026, Minister David Maynier visited Bontebok National Park to learn about the recovery efforts after severe flooding caused by the Breede River in May 2026. The floods significantly damaged the park, affecting chalets, a picnic area, and almost completely destroying the main road to the accommodation. Repair costs are estimated at R12.3 million. Minister Maynier praised the park management for their quick actions during the emergency, which included evacuating guests and saving park furniture. The main road has been repaired quickly and made stronger, and much of the debris from the flooding has been cleared. Six chalets, the campsite, and three hiking trails have reopened to visitors. Work continues on repairing the remaining chalets, two hiking trails, and the picnic site. Minister Maynier encouraged people to visit the park, noting that although repairs are still ongoing, it remains a beautiful place in the Western Cape worth exploring.
