The Federal Government of Nigeria has started a new system to measure how many people watch television in Lagos. This system, called the Audience Measurement System (AMS), is part of a broader effort to improve the country's broadcasting industry, which was recently updated to digital technology. During a press conference, the Minister of Information, Mr. Mohammed Idris, explained that this system will provide important information about who watches what on TV and when. This data will help TV stations create better programs, assist advertisers in making informed decisions, and support content creators. The system aims to build trust with the public by being transparent about how it works and protecting the privacy of households involved. The project is a collaboration between local companies and a Bulgarian firm to ensure it meets international standards. The Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Mr. Charles Ebuebu, noted that Nigeria previously used unreliable methods to measure TV audiences and emphasized the need for accurate data to help broadcasters and advertisers. The new AMS will eventually expand beyond Lagos to cover the entire country. The system includes devices that will track what shows are being watched in selected homes and send that information to a central database. Households participating in the study will receive monthly rewards for their involvement. Overall, this initiative is expected to enhance the effectiveness of advertising and improve the quality of television content in Nigeria.
