The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in Nigeria is asking for an investigation into some civil society organizations (CSOs) that may be helping human traffickers. These traffickers are reportedly pretending to be part of these organizations to gain trust in vulnerable communities and then take children away. Recently, NAPTIP has rescued 118 children who were trafficked from several states, including Nasarawa and Benue. They found some of these children in various locations, including a building in Anambra State and with a nurse at a medical center. NAPTIP's spokesperson, Vincent Adekoye, explained that traffickers are taking advantage of communities facing problems like insecurity and conflicts. They approach families by offering help, such as education, but their real intention is to abduct children. The agency is also looking to check the activities of CSOs to ensure they are not being misused by criminals. They are urging Nigerians to be alert and report any suspicious activities involving organizations trying to take children from families. Additionally, NAPTIP mentioned that traffickers are using social media to recruit young people by promising them good jobs and better lives abroad. They recently rescued 16 young Nigerian men from Thailand who had been lured by these false job offers. Overall, NAPTIP is working to protect children and vulnerable individuals from being exploited by traffickers.
