In the second quarter of 2026, Nigeria's economy grew by 4.43% compared to the same time last year, which is an improvement from 4.23% in 2025. This growth is also better than the 3.89% increase seen in the first quarter of 2026. Overall, the economy grew by 4.16% in the first half of 2026, up from 3.68% during the same period in 2025. The growth is becoming more widespread, with 27 different sectors of the economy showing growth of over 3%, compared to 23 sectors last year. Key sectors like manufacturing and agriculture saw significant improvements, with manufacturing growing by 3.24% and agriculture by 4.39%. The services sector, which is the biggest part of the economy, grew by 4.60%. The Finance Ministry noted that the Nigerian currency, the naira, has strengthened against the dollar, which helped the economy grow by about 17% when measured in US dollars. This growth, along with government programs aimed at helping people, could improve living standards and reduce poverty. Nigeria is on track to become one of Africa's largest economies and aims for a $1 trillion economy by 2030. The International Monetary Fund has recognized Nigeria as one of the top contributors to global economic growth this year, predicting it will account for about 1.5% of that growth. The government emphasizes the need to maintain economic reforms and stability to ensure that the benefits of growth reach more people across the country.
