President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Leonard Gaoretelelwe Lekgetho as the new head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) in South Africa, starting on September 1, 2026. He replaces Andy Mothibi, who left the position to become the National Director of Public Prosecutions. The SIU is an independent body that investigates serious cases of corruption and mismanagement in government institutions and public funds. Its goal is to uncover wrongdoing and recover any financial losses for the state. Mr. Lekgetho has worked at the SIU for 19 years and has held various roles, including Chief Operations Officer. He also has experience as an investigator in a previous organization focused on special operations. He holds degrees in law, education, and science, as well as qualifications in forensic auditing and cyber law. President Ramaphosa expressed his support for Mr. Lekgetho and the SIU team as they work to combat crime and corruption in South Africa.
