From September 5 to 10, 2026, Dr. Maxime Houinato, the UN Women Regional Director for West and Central Africa, will visit Ziguinchor, Senegal, with Ms. Arlette Mvondo, the UN Women Representative in Senegal. Their goal is to support and promote women's leadership, especially in peacebuilding and development, as women's rights are facing challenges in the region. During the visit, Dr. Houinato will meet with women who play important roles in peace discussions and governance. Dr. Houinato will participate in handing over equipment to help a center that supports women and girls who have experienced violence, ensuring they have access to necessary services and a safe environment. Additionally, he will meet women farmers involved in a project aimed at helping them access technology and markets, which is crucial for their economic independence. Dr. Houinato emphasizes that true equality means women having the power to make their voices heard, live free from violence, and shape their own futures. He will also engage with young people and promote opportunities for girls in sports, especially as Senegal prepares for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.
