The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported an increase in Lassa fever cases, with 14 new confirmed cases bringing the total to 1,035. This update covers the period from August 10 to August 16 and includes cases from Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, and Benue states. The number of deaths has also risen to 252, resulting in a higher death rate of 24.4% compared to 18.6% in 2025. The previous week (week 32) had reported only four new cases, showing fluctuations in the number of infections. So far, 23 states have reported at least one case of Lassa fever across 117 local government areas, with the majority of cases concentrated in five states: Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, Benue, and Edo. The most affected age group is people aged 21 to 30 years. Fortunately, there have been no new infections among healthcare workers in the last two weeks. The NCDC continues to monitor the situation and take action as Lassa fever remains a serious health issue in affected areas.
