Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized President Bola Tinubu's economic policies, particularly regarding the high cost of petrol in Nigeria. He pointed out that the price of petrol has reached about ₦1,400 per litre, meaning a worker earning the minimum wage of ₦70,000 would spend around ₦56,000 to buy just 40 litres. This amount is 80% of their monthly wage, leaving them with only ₦14,000 for all other living expenses like food and rent. Atiku's team argues that the rising fuel prices affect not just transportation but also the costs of food and other goods. They compared Nigeria's petrol prices to those in other oil-producing countries, highlighting that Nigeria's prices are much higher despite being a major oil producer. They also questioned the government's claims about the benefits of removing petrol subsidies, demanding more transparency regarding the financial gains and how they are used. Atiku's camp believes reducing fuel costs could help lower prices across the economy. As the 2027 elections approach, they emphasize the need for real economic relief for Nigerians instead of temporary fixes.
