A group of elderly Nigerians, known as Grandparents, is asking the government for free healthcare, better safety, and improved support for older people so they can live with dignity. They made these requests during a walk in Abuja to celebrate International Grandparents Day. A 91-year-old woman, Deaconess Mabel Ojie, spoke about the difficulties older people face, like poor health, loneliness, and not getting enough care. She urged the government to create laws to protect elderly citizens and provide them with medical care, housing, and security, especially for those who are vulnerable. Another elder, Mr. Tunji Akinyoade, highlighted the struggles pensioners face in accessing their benefits, often having to wait in long lines. He called for a better system to ensure they receive their pensions easily. Dr. Isaac Komolafe, the Executive Director of a family and leadership organization, emphasized the important role grandparents play in families and society. He encouraged respect and support for older people, such as giving them priority in hospitals and public services. He also advocated for policies that would help grandparents, including free medical care and discounts at stores. Overall, the group believes that improving the lives of older citizens will not only help them but also preserve Nigeria’s cultural and moral values for future generations.
