In Plateau State, Nigeria, there has been a serious outbreak of diphtheria, leading to the deaths of at least 23 people. Over the past two weeks, health officials have reported 143 suspected cases of the disease. The situation worsened recently in Jos North, where 15 deaths and 117 suspected cases were recorded. Dr. Nicholas Baamlong, the Plateau State Health Commissioner, mentioned that nine patients are currently being treated in hospitals. These patients are kept in isolation to prevent the disease from spreading further. The state government is working hard to control the outbreak by increasing surveillance and educating the public about the disease. One of the main challenges in fighting this outbreak is the lack of diphtheria antitoxin, which is crucial for treatment. Additionally, many patients are arriving at health facilities too late for effective treatment. There are also issues with diagnosing suspected cases because the necessary special containers for transporting samples to laboratories are unavailable. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control is aware of the situation and is expected to provide assistance, including antitoxin and sample collection containers. The government is also running awareness campaigns to help communities understand how to recognize symptoms, how the disease spreads, and how to prevent it.
