The court had previously ruled that the FBI could not deny the existence of records related to Tinubu's investigation. However, this does not mean that he was found guilty of any crime. The investigation is part of a larger effort by an activist seeking information about a heroin trafficking operation in Chicago from that time. Some sections of the records are still being kept secret by the FBI for reasons related to privacy and safety. A lobbying firm connected to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar shared parts of the FBI's declaration to counter claims that Tinubu was never investigated. In response, Tinubu's media adviser dismissed the claims as politically motivated, suggesting that the accusations were attempts to create controversy ahead of the upcoming elections. He argued that the focus should be on policy discussions rather than old investigations. Tinubu's legal team is fighting to keep certain records private, claiming that releasing them would violate his rights.
