The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Nigeria has responded to claims made by the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) that INEC changed the names of their official candidates for the upcoming 2027 elections. INEC called these claims "unfounded" and clarified that it does not have the authority to choose or change candidates for political parties. According to INEC, political parties are solely responsible for nominating their candidates. They also mentioned that they only oversee the nomination process to ensure it follows the rules. Each of the 22 registered political parties has appointed trained officers to help with their nominations, and INEC provided them with access codes to submit their candidate lists. INEC emphasized that the candidate lists were created based on the submissions made by the parties, which were signed by their leaders. They assured everyone that they are committed to being transparent and fair in the electoral process.
