Nigeria is currently facing a serious outbreak of Lassa fever, with 252 deaths reported from 1,035 confirmed cases. This means that about 24.4% of those infected have died, which is higher than last year's rate of 18.6%. Recently, there were 14 new cases reported, a significant increase from just four the previous week. Most of the cases are concentrated in five states: Ondo, Bauchi, Taraba, Edo, and Benue, which together account for 87% of all confirmed cases. Ondo alone has 33% of the cases. The outbreak has affected people of various ages, with most cases occurring in individuals aged 21 to 30. Challenges in managing the outbreak include late presentation of cases to healthcare facilities, high treatment costs, and a lack of awareness in communities. Additionally, 54 healthcare workers have been affected, highlighting the need for better infection control measures. To combat the outbreak, health authorities are enhancing surveillance, contact tracing, and training for healthcare workers. They are also encouraging communities to engage more in prevention efforts. Lassa fever is spread mainly through contact with contaminated food or items from infected rats, and it can also spread between people, especially in healthcare settings. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is working to improve the response to the outbreak and reduce the number of deaths.
