Wellington Clinics in Abuja has stated that it is not involved in any financial dealings related to a disputed kidney transplant that took place at their facility. The clinic claims that its only role was to provide a suitable environment for the surgery, which was conducted by an independent medical team led by Dr. Benjamin Friday Oyimeh. The hospital clarified that the medical team was responsible for selecting and assessing both the kidney donor and the recipient. They emphasized that they did not take part in any negotiations or transactions related to the transplant and did not benefit from it. The donor, who was admitted under the name Abubakar Hassan, underwent surgery on April 24, 2026, and was discharged four days later. He had provided several documents to the hospital, including a court affidavit and identification papers. However, it was later suggested that his real name might be Samuel Ezekiel. Wellington Clinics is cooperating with a police investigation into the matter and has temporarily suspended all kidney transplant services until the investigation is complete. The clinic has assured that it is committed to ethical healthcare practices and is open to scrutiny of its records regarding the transplant.
