IPPG: Over 150 African Oil, Gas Projects Stalled as Funding Retreat Threatens 125bn Barrels Reserves

The article discusses a significant problem facing Africa's oil and gas industry. Over 150 important projects have been stalled because international investors are pulling back their funding, largely due to a global push for cleaner energy. This situation is alarming since Africa has a lot of oil and gas resources—more than 125 billion barrels of oil and 620 trillion cubic feet of natural gas—but it only attracts a small portion (about 3%) of global energy investment. The chairman of the Independent Petroleum Producers Group (IPPG), Adegbite Falade, highlighted that Africa needs around $200 billion each year for energy investments but currently manages to secure just over half of that amount. He pointed out that many people in Africa still lack electricity, and the continent spends over $60 billion a year on fuel imports, even though it produces oil. Falade emphasized that African countries should take more control of their energy future. He noted Nigeria's success in increasing local oil production and refining capacity, which has helped reduce fuel imports. To address the funding shortfall, he suggested creating an Africa Energy Bank to finance energy projects, building more gas infrastructure, enhancing regional trade agreements, and combining renewable energy with gas development. He called for governments to provide stable regulations and faster approvals for projects, urging that Africa should not have to choose between using oil and gas or renewable energy, as it can benefit from both.
