A tragic building collapse in Ilorin, Kwara State, resulted in the deaths of a mother and her four children on September 1, 2026. The incident occurred around 5 a.m. when a boys’ quarters attached to a three-storey building fell down. Eight family members were trapped, but three survived, including the father, who was rescued after shouting for help from a toilet. Rescue efforts revealed that the mother, Hajia Wasilat Qudus, and her youngest child, Mukhtar, were found dead together. The other deceased children were Mistura, Barakat, and Firdaos. Mistura was a university graduate about to start her National Youth Service Corps program. The family was already facing challenges, as the father, Kale Mohammed Qudus, was on medical leave from his job in the army. Witnesses mentioned that the building had shown signs of damage before the collapse, but the specific part that fell had not been previously identified as problematic. Local officials are investigating the cause of the collapse and have evacuated residents from the main building for safety.
