The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YSIEC) has started checking candidates for local government elections scheduled for September 26. This screening process will last from September 1 to 7 and involves candidates for positions like chairperson, vice-chairperson, and council members across 17 local government areas in Yobe State. The chairman of YSIEC, Dr. Ibrahim Yabani, explained that the election date was changed from June 6 to September 26 due to a recent change in the law by the Yobe State House of Assembly. This change was necessary to avoid having the local elections too close to political party primaries for the 2027 general elections, which would have created a lot of stress for everyone involved. The screening is happening at various locations: council candidates are being checked in three major towns, while those running for chairperson and vice-chairperson positions are being evaluated at the YSIEC headquarters in Damaturu. Special teams made up of experienced members of the commission are handling the screening process to ensure everything runs smoothly and legally.
