The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported that there have been 14 new cases of Lassa fever in Nigeria, bringing the total number of infections this year to 1,035. Sadly, the death toll has also increased to 252. These new cases were found in the states of Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, and Benue between August 10 and August 16. The death rate from Lassa fever has risen to 24.4%, which is higher than last year's rate of 18.6%. In the previous week (week 32), there were only four new cases reported, showing that the number of cases can change from week to week. Overall, 23 states in Nigeria have reported at least one case of Lassa fever this year. The NCDC is continuing its efforts to monitor and respond to this disease, as it remains a serious health issue in the affected areas.
