A recent filing by the FBI in a US court has confirmed that Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President of Nigeria, was investigated by the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for drug-related crimes in the early 1990s. This information emerged as part of a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit seeking access to records about Tinubu. The FBI's declaration, filed on August 28, states that the records were collected during an investigation into drug trafficking. However, Tinubu's team has rejected these claims, calling them politically motivated. The lawsuit was initiated by Aaron Greenspan, who is trying to obtain Tinubu's entire FBI file from that time. In a previous ruling from April 2025, a US judge acknowledged that Tinubu was indeed a subject of the investigation but did not imply that he was guilty of any crime. The FBI has been withholding some records, citing privacy and safety concerns. As Nigeria approaches its 2027 presidential elections, Tinubu's administration faces opposition from politicians like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is using the information in the lawsuit to challenge Tinubu. Tinubu's spokesperson, Sunday Dare, has criticized these allegations as desperate attempts to create controversy and has demanded evidence to support the claims made by Atiku and the lobbying firm involved.
