Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State hosted a large event to promote unity among the Ijaw people, following a recent leadership dispute within the Ijaw National Congress (INC). The conflict arose after the INC elected High Chief MacDonald Igbadiwe as its leader in an event held in Warri, which was controversial because it happened outside the traditional venue. To resolve this, Governor Diri set up a reconciliation committee led by Dr. Mathew Seiyefa. During the unity event, Diri urged everyone to put aside their differences and work together for the benefit of the Ijaw community. Diri called for the new INC leadership to focus on uniting the Ijaw people and protecting their identity. He warned that if the Ijaw do not unite, others will make decisions for them.
