The Headies, an award show in Nigeria, has responded to claims that gospel artists are being left out of major award categories. Gospel singer Gaise Baba wrote a letter saying that gospel music is unfairly placed in separate categories, which makes it harder for those artists to compete for top honors. He also mentioned that a recent winner in the Inspirational Music category was not announced during the ceremony. In their response, the Headies organizers stated that gospel artists have actually been nominated and have won awards in general categories in the past. They provided examples of successful gospel artists like Lara George, Kefee, Timi Dakolo, and Nikki Laoye, who have all received major nominations and wins. The Headies explained that the Inspirational Music category was created to give more visibility to gospel artists, not to isolate them. They clarified that just because an artist doesn’t make the final list of nominees, it doesn’t mean they are being intentionally excluded. The awards have many categories, and not all can be presented during the live broadcast due to time constraints. The next Headies ceremony is set for October 25, 2026, in Toronto, Canada.
