A recent court ruling in Ogun State, Nigeria, has sent a case regarding the selection of the next Awujale, the traditional ruler of Ijebuland, to an administrative judge for reassignment. The Fusengbuwa ruling house filed the lawsuit against Governor Dapo Abiodun and several others, claiming that the government improperly stopped the selection process after the death of the previous king, Oba Sikiru Adetona, in July 2025. The lawsuit was filed on August 21, 2026, and the vacation judge, Justice A.A. Omoniyi, decided to pass the case to another judge because he is going on vacation soon and cannot continue with the case. He acknowledged the urgency of the situation but felt he didn't have enough time to address it before leaving. The Fusengbuwa ruling house argues that they have followed the law in trying to select a new king and that the government's actions to halt the process were unwarranted. They have been waiting for seven months for the selection to proceed and are seeking the court's help to ensure the process continues. The case is set to be heard again on September 23, 2026.
