The Lagos State Government has issued a strong warning to husbands about the consequences of having sex with their wives without consent. They stated that if a husband forces his wife to have sex against her will, he could face life imprisonment if found guilty. This announcement was made by Haroun Adebayo, the Director of Public Prosecutions, during an event to promote awareness about domestic and sexual violence. He clarified that while Nigerian law does not classify a husband forcing sex on his wife as rape, it can be considered sexual assault by penetration, which carries a severe penalty. Adebayo emphasized that if a couple is having problems and the wife refuses sex, the husband cannot force her. If he does, she has the right to report him, and he could be prosecuted. He urged anyone facing such situations to contact the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency for help.
