The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) in Nigeria is launching a campaign to vaccinate between 15,000 and 20,000 dogs to help stop the spread of rabies. This initiative is taking place across 62 areas in the capital city, following recent rabies outbreaks in certain regions. The Mandate Secretary of the Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, Abdullahi Suleiman Ango, stated that there are over 100 experienced veterinarians working on this project and that they believe they can complete the vaccination in two weeks. He mentioned that since the campaign started, there have been no new rabies cases reported. Dr. Karnak Dandam, the Director of Veterinary Services, highlighted the seriousness of rabies, explaining that if a rabid dog bites a person and they don’t get immediate treatment, it can lead to death. However, he reassured that rabies is completely preventable through dog vaccinations, which will also protect humans from the disease.
