Cross River State in Nigeria has successfully maintained a 95% immunisation coverage rate, which is a positive achievement for public health. The state government is now focusing on improving access to vaccines, especially in remote areas where healthcare facilities are limited. Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, the Commissioner for Health, mentioned that currently, only about 200 out of more than 1,000 health facilities in the state offer immunisation services. He emphasized the need for better partnerships and funding to address these gaps. A team from the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency visited the state to evaluate its immunisation and polio surveillance efforts. They found that Cross River is doing well in terms of immunisation coverage and has not reported any cases of vaccine-derived poliovirus. However, they are working to strengthen the healthcare system to prevent any future outbreaks. The evaluation included visits to several local government areas and health facilities to gather information and identify areas for improvement. Overall, the state aims to enhance its healthcare delivery and ensure that vaccines are accessible to everyone.
