The Kwara State House of Assembly has faced criticism for declaring the seats of two lawmakers vacant because they switched parties from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Chief Gbenga Awoyale, the President of Orisun Igbomina, warned that this decision could worsen existing political tensions in the state. Awoyale emphasized the importance of following the rules about lawmakers changing parties but cautioned against actions that could escalate conflicts. The Assembly's decision was based on a request from the APC chairman, who argued that the lawmakers should lose their seats since they were elected under the APC banner and there was no division within the party to justify their switch. He argued that while the party's viewpoint is important, the legislature should make independent decisions based on constitutional law, not just party politics. He also highlighted that the political fallout could negatively affect the constituents of the lawmakers involved, stating that the people should not suffer due to party disputes. Awoyale called for dialogue and reconciliation instead of retaliation, urging all parties to prioritize the people's interests and maintain the integrity of the legislature.
