Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu aims to make Lagos not just Nigeria's commercial hub but also Africa's center for innovation, targeting over $80 billion for technology development. Speaking at the GITEX Nigeria event, he emphasized that achieving this goal requires ongoing investment in infrastructure, talent, and effective policies, rather than just promises. Sanwo-Olu highlighted that Lagos is already a significant economic player in Africa and has produced successful tech companies. He stressed the importance of Africa becoming a creator of technology rather than just a consumer, advocating for local development of digital tools and infrastructure. He mentioned that Lagos has laid extensive fiber-optic networks to boost connectivity and is working on improving electricity supply to support productivity. Sanwo-Olu encouraged investors to establish operations in Lagos, viewing it as a gateway to the African market. Other speakers at the event, including Wamkele Mene from the African Continental Free Trade Area, noted Nigeria's leadership in advancing Africa's digital economy through collaboration and innovation. They emphasized the need for local expertise and a secure digital environment to support economic growth. Overall, the focus is on transforming Lagos into a major technology hub that can drive economic opportunities across Africa.
