The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) recently held a ceremony to welcome new leaders and bid farewell to those leaving their positions. General Birame Diop from Senegal is the new President of the ECOWAS Commission, taking over from Dr. Omar Alieu Touray from The Gambia. Alongside him, Anthony Ogunjimi from Nigeria has become the new Vice President, replacing Damtien Tchintchibidja from Togo. The ceremony took place at the ECOWAS headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria. It included the launch of a special publication celebrating ECOWAS's achievements over the past 50 years and formal handover notes between outgoing and incoming officials. In his speech, General Diop emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation among West African countries to tackle regional challenges and promote peace and prosperity. He called for teamwork to strengthen the ECOWAS Commission and improve the lives of citizens in the region. Nigeria's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, also spoke, urging the new leadership to focus on practical projects that benefit the community and ensure that ECOWAS remains effective and relevant. Overall, the event marked a transition to a new leadership phase for ECOWAS, with a strong call for collaboration and tangible results to enhance regional integration.
