A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered that a lawsuit challenging the upcoming local government elections in Oyo State be served to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC). The case was brought by Akinloye Olusegun Oyeniyi, who wants the court to stop the elections from happening. Oyeniyi's lawyer argues that the OYSIEC does not have the authority to verify or screen candidates for the elections, as this power is limited by the Nigerian Constitution and the Electoral Act. He is asking the court to declare that the OYSIEC's actions in their election schedule are not allowed under the law and infringe on his rights to vote and run for office. Oyeniyi believes that if the elections go ahead as planned, it will negatively impact him. He also claims that allowing his requests would not harm the election authorities and would help uphold the law and democracy. The judge has scheduled the next court session for September 10, 2026, to check if the lawsuit has been properly served to the involved parties.
