The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged politicians and their supporters to stop using the name of Jesus Christ in their political discussions as the 2027 elections approach. CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, made this statement after a public figure mentioned Jesus while discussing a political candidate, Peter Obi. Archbishop Okoh emphasized that Jesus should not be used as a tool in politics. He stated that while everyone is free to support their chosen candidates, such as Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, or President Bola Tinubu, politicians should not be treated as if they hold a divine status. He warned against what he called "messianic politics," where politicians are described in ways that confuse political leadership with spiritual salvation. Okoh urged people to focus on important election issues like the candidates' skills, character, policies, and the future of Nigeria, rather than mixing these discussions with religious references. He called for respectful and responsible engagement in political debates as the election campaigns intensify.
